Academic Growth

As with achievement, Hawaii recognizes the importance of student growth as a key component of academic performance. Student and school growth are measured using two models: the Hawaii Student Growth Percentile Model for students taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), and Transition Matricies for students taking the Hawaii State Alternate Assessment (HSA-Alt) and the Kaiapuni Assessment of Educational Outcomes (KAEO). Together, these models provide important information to track student and school progress over time. Data as of 2022-2023.

KAEO

Median growth percentile

Median growth percentiles (MGPs) indicate how much a school's achievement is growing compared to other schools. MGPs are based on the large majority of students taking the SBA in language arts and mathematics. This model conditions on prior achievement, therefore, the results are comparable regardless of a school's student demographics and community characteristics.

English Language Arts

50th

What does this mean?

MGPs indicate a school's median student growth percentile (SGP) which ranges from 99 to 1. Therefore, a language arts MGP of 54 means half of its students had a growth percentile of 54 or higher. Alternatively stated, half of the students had growth of 54 or below.

How was this calculated?

School MGPs are calculated from full school year students who, at a minimum, took the SBA in the current and prior year(s).

Math

50th

What does this mean?

MGPs indicate a school's median student growth percentile (SGP) which ranges from 99 to 1. Therefore, a math MGP of 54 means half of its students had a growth percentile of 54 or higher. Alternatively stated, half of the students had growth of 54 or below.

How was this calculated?

School MGPs are calculated from FSY students who, at a minimum, took the SBA in the current and prior year(s).

Kaiapuni Assessment of Education Outcomes (KAEO)

Hawaiian Language Arts

What does this mean?

The percent of students taking the KAEO language arts assessment who achieved one year of growth.

How was this calculated?

The percent of students meeting one year of growth based on current and prior year achievement levels. For example, a student earning a proficiency level of 3 in the prior year and a proficiency level of 2 in the current year is considered "not making one year of growth." Conversely, a student earning a proficiency level of 2 in the prior year and a proficiency level of 3 in the current year, based on the matrix, the student is considered "making one year of growth."

Math

What does this mean?

The percent of students taking the KAEO mathematics assessment who achieved one year of growth.

Alternate assessment growth measure

English Language Arts

What does this mean?

The percent of students taking the HSA-Alt English Language Arts assessment who achieved one year of growth.

The percent of students taking the HSA-Alt mathematics who achieved one year of growth.
